Katrina and Rita have had a dramatic impact on natural gas production, an industry where US production had already peaked. This could mean a cold winter for many US citizens this winter. But, what does it mean for the supply and cost of fertilizer next growing season? And consequently, food production?

The CEO of Dow Chemical says the US government should declare a national emergency to shock consumers about the status of natural gas supplies: http://www.planetark.com/dailynewsstory.cfm/newsid/32869/story.htm

Also, for a very informative perspective of the US natural gas industry from a natural gas market analyst, listen to this 30 minute interview from Global Public Media: http://www.globalpublicmedia.com/interviews/512

Continued escalation of input costs could make organic agriculture a necessity rather than a choice.
