Here is a list of upcoming workshops and events hosted by
the Sequatchie Valley Institute, an environmental and
sustainable living education center located in Southeast
Tennessee.
The mission of the Sequatchie Valley Institute is to offer
society an opportunity to experience and learn about living
in harmony with nature by providing: education, art and
research opportunities, land conservation and restoration; a
dynamic model residence and learning center and a vision for
attaining a sustainable future
Spring and Summer '05 Events:
SVI is currently accepting applications for internships this
season. Internships could start anytime in March and last
through November or anytime in between. Please email
barrotr@yahoo.com or call 423-949-5922 for info.
April 2nd - Spring Wildflower Hike and Open House. Hike
starts around 11am Central Time. The hike will last a few
hours. There will be a longer, rougher hike that continues
into the late afternoon. Open House starts at 9am with
ongoing tours.
April 9th - Music, Art, and the Environment Contemporary
Music Festival. We're collaborating with UTC's Music Dept.
to have musicians, artists, and performers among the trees
and hanging form the cliffs. A natural foods buffet will be
included.
April 16th - Spring Wildflower Hike and Open House. Hike
starts at 11 am central time. The hike will last a few
hours. We will compare and contrast the amazing change in
wildflower diversity and color form the first hike. There
will be a longer, rougher hike that continues into the late
afternoon. Open House starts at 9 am with ongoing tours.
April 23rd - "Lunch and a Log" Shiitake Mushroom Workshop
for Aquarium Members (and the public too; please register
through the aquarium). 9am - 1pm Central Time. Learn how to
grow your own delicious and nutritious shiitake mushrooms
and take home a log!
April 24th - "Lunch and a Log" Shiitake Mushroom Workshop
for the general public. Come learn how to grow your own
delicious and nutritious Shiitake mushrooms and take a log
home! See times above.
April 30th - Open House Vegan Potluck - Tours at 11 am, 1pm
and 3pm central time. Dinner at 5pm.
May 14th - "Wine in the Woods" wine-tasting fundraiser. For
SVI members only. You can become a member at the door.
May 19-29th - Natural Building Workshop. an intensive 10 day
workshop covering a variety of natural building methods,
including cob and timber framing. we're still setting the
schedule for this year's training... it'll be great, though,
that's for sure... a full schedule will be available soon.
June 23-26th - "Food For Life" Workshops. The Sequatchie
Valley Institute at Moonshadow invites you to the seventh
annual "Food For Life" in the new millenium. A gathering
about the source and protection of life held in beautiful
rural Tennessee on June 23-26, 2005. Our sixth annual
comprehensive food conference includes skill-building
workshops as well as discussion-oriented political
dialogues. Learn various food preservation strategies
including canning, fermentation (miso, sauerkraut, kimchi,
wine, beer, mead and champagnes) as well as different
methods of cooking and diet choices, macrobiotics, health
and nutrition. Attend workshops on edible and medicinal
plants, seed saving, permaculture, biodynamic and organic
gardening practices. Engage in theoretical and political
explorations of the social and ecological implications of
industrial agriculture. Discuss strategies for mobilizing
against biotech and agribusiness, and promoting sustainable
community based food systems instead of global monopolies.
Contact Moonshadow for a brochure which explains the
schedule and fees (available in spring).
All workshops at the Sequatchie Valley Institute are
intentionally affordable using a sliding scale based on your
income. Food exchange is available.
