Bill is currently working on several books ........ here are his comments on works in progress:
Traditional Food Processing
Building on the earlier book, The Permaculture Book of Ferment & Human Nutrition, of which a few remain, this new and more comprehensive book gives detailed instructions on gathering, preparing, storing and preserving foods from traditional sources. It also has much more on meats, and is considerably more comprehensive than 'Ferment'. A few more traditional recipes also creep in. Will be thoroughly indexed.
Sustainable Living in Cold Climates
How to dress, build, garden and live wisely in cold-winter climates. From the subtropics with severe frosts like northern N.S.W., Australia, to Arctic and Antarctic areas. Essential for Northern Europe, Russia, the Himalayas, Canada, North-west and North-east U.S.A., Andes, Patagonia, Southern Africa, high tropical mountains or volcanos, and of course Tasmania, Iceland, Newfoundland, Scandinavia, Japan, Mongolia, China..........
Patterns and Designs in Nature
Mainly with respect to applied design in landscape, buildings and agriculture. A sophisticated pattern of materials directs, harvests, conveys and transmutes the flow of wind, water, light and energy. An appropriate pattern of planting can increase yields by 50 or more times - reliably.
It has long been clear to Permaculture designers that the application of sensible, practical patterns is the underlying key to sustainability.
The Potato Chronicles:Looking Upwards from Tasmania
As a patriotic act, I have written a book on the origin, species, varieties, culture and travels of the potato. The economy of Tasmania, both climatic and export, has long been based on this commodity, and Tasmanians are truly potato connoisseurs.
The greatest changes in usage and cultivation are recent, as is the introduction of 'selected' species for best flavour and culinary useages. This book will assist all islanders to know their potatoes - an admirable endpoint.
While the potato is no longer a staple food and in the interests of good diet, is much reduced in usage, it is still a reliable local and domestic starch, and a source of Vitamin C.
A Strandlopers Guide to Maritime Resources in Tasmania
The one thing liberally available to peripatetic Tasmanians is their coasts and islands. A vast array of plants and animals are encountered in the maritime environment, and this book is an attempt to record many of these and their uses, before exotic starfish or over-development wipes them out, as has happened locally.
