My books say pistachio can be grown in zone 7-9. If there are places in Nevada in that range, then go for it.The Banana Tree in Easton Pa. has seed (215-253-9589). Copacabana in Moraga Ca has tropicals (415-2542302), Forest Farm in Oregon may have it (503-846-6963), Lawyer Nursery has seed (406-826-3881), Louisiana Nursery may have plants (318-948-3696) and Neon Palm in Santa Rosa (707-578-7467) is worth a try.
Mulberry is likely to do well, jujube is zone 6-10 and has potential, sea buckthorn can take the cold but I don't know about dry, goumi isvery hardy, olive is zone 9-10.

Why not pistachio? (Assuming it can be found, none of the mailorder places seem to carry it...)
I believe mulberry, jujube, sea buckthorn, goumi, olive are fairly drought resistant; can't speak for suitability for this location.

Sharon,
I think pistachio, and even the colder tolerant pistache are unlikely
candidates for the region in question except for, maybe, the very
rare microclimate.
