One concern with putting a vapor barrier *over* insulation is that if
condensation occurs it will drip onto existing insulation. Maybe better
to just add extra insulation as opposed to vapor barrier, and make sure
your roof doesn't leak. Or...
If you have access, install it below insulation. It is possible to
staple it in wide sheets directly to studs/trusses/ceiling joists - it
will compress behind sheet rock & create a more continuous barrier that
way. (As opposed to getting narrow pre-cut strips & putting them in
between studs/trusses/ceiling joists.)
Also available under the trade name Reflectix. If you're doing even a
moderately sized space, we found it easy and inexpensive to buy larger
rolls and cut to size w/utility knife.
