Dear friends,
Just shedding some light on the Haitians issue, MPP (Mouvman Peyizan Papay) members are now visiting the three main RBP permaculture institutes (IPEC, IPA and IPEP) in Brazil as part of a program designed by PAL (Permacultura America Latina) and RBP (Rede Brasileira de Permacultura) in conjunction with MPP... They are now visiting IPA's experience in the Amazon and will be heading down to the "Pampa Gaucho" (in the very sth of Brazil) next week where they'll be staying for an extra 5 weeks learning about Voisin, biodigestors, biomineralisation, biofertilisers, seed banks built with local materials and lots more...
Cheers!
Guilherme

Miekal,
I do not doubt your local use of the term, but there seems to be a
variation that may be regional. For example:
"Maraska Sljivovica Slivovitz
Maraska Slivovitz is a pure, natural brandy made by special
fermentation and distillation of the finest ripe blue plums grown in
the rich soil of the Adriatic Coast, the second largest plum-growing
area in the world. "Sljvovica" is the common name for Croatian plum
brandy from former Yugoslavia. Traditionally this spirit is
double-distilled and has been famous since the Middle Ages. The fruit
comes from trees never less than 20 years old and the mash is
fermented for three months in large 2,000 gallon tanks. After a second
distillation it is matured in specially treated 500-gallon oak casks
for a minimum of 2 years."

Various other sources say that palinca is a synonym for slivovitz,
although apparently not in the area you are familiar with.
...Which all goes to show it is helpful to be careful when you wish to
drink an alcoholic beverage to know what you are drinking. If you
doubt it, ask any "clueless American" who orders a large beer in
Germany...

Here's an enlightening article on rakiya, which is about the only kind of
plum liquor you can find in places like Bulgaria:
