I'm pleased to announce the next Permaculture Teacher Training. Christopher
Peck and I continue to be impressed with the level of students showing up
with an interest in teaching. In the early '90s it seemed that most people
were interested in teaching the Basic Permaculture Design Course. Today there
is greater diversity: some wish to teach the course but many wish to adapt
permaculture to school settings, engage in community and economic
development, or do political organizing and alliance-building. There are also
professionals and academics showing up who seek to integrate the permaculture
framework into their disciplines.

What people seem to like about this course is that we focus on applying
permaculture principles to the art of designing educational experiences
applicable to multiple audiences and situations. The course is more about
permacultural communication (Zone 0) than instruction on the most effective
way to cover the characteristics of certain climactic zones. Our assumption
is that the primary content of permaculture is to be explored on one's own
through study and experience. As such, this course doesn't pretend to replace
that, though the entire experience is filled with people teaching various
content areas of permaculture. But true to permaculture, the course is more
about designing whole learning experiences than knowing facts, and perhaps
this why the course has become popular. We have designed a scholarship fund
to assist students in need, and we also reinvest surplus in the local
permaculture guild that organizes each course. The course is organized by
its graduates, so if you wish to learn more about the experience from that
perspective, I encourage you to contact Kat Steele (kat@steelemoon.com), who
is organizing the California course this Summer, and Mary Lou Singleton
(aural@swcp.com), who is organizing the September course in Santa Fe.
