Thanks for this Lawrence. I lived in England at the time of the events of
the story and can attest to the 'push' Blair was giving biotechnology,
highlighting the lead British researchers and companies had on many in the
world and therefore drawing the implicit conclusion that it was our
patriotic duty to support the research and products.

Considering that all of the 'advanced' western nations have exported
manufacture to countries with lower worker costs (how delightfully free this
phrase is of the actual reality of the conditions most of these 'workers'
experience), new technology is all that these nations have to maintain their
economic preeminence. Therefore, it does not matter what the technology is,
or whether it works, as long as it's new and can be sold.

I have never been an adherent to conspiracy theories, they often attribute
far too much forethought, insight and intelligence to those in positions of
power (and also create a feeling of helplessness in those that see
conspiracies everywhere!) But, there would seem to be compelling
circumstantial evidence why Pusztai's work (or at least the public
expression of it) would lead to all that has happened.

I was one of those more than overjoyed when Blair came to power after 18
years of Conservative rule, now I am one of the many not just disillusioned
with Blair but the political process itself.

What can we do?

[you may not agree with this but .......]
1) Be glad you have good quality nuclear power in France (same quality in US
too).
Less dependency on oil, etc.
[you may agree with this though......]
2) You no longer have Mitterand in power.
3) You live in France (and apparently in a nice area), which has an
incredible history
(except when the Catholics mistreated the Huguenots)
4)You can visit the US whenever you want, likewise Oz, Tasmania and a number
of other nice places around the
world. :-)

Put your votes behind a really sound, constitution-oriented judicial system
and a democratic political system
that adheres to a solid capitalistic economy.

Vote green as long as the candidates aren't commies.

Work locally to build community, local economies and local food production
systems,
i.e. the Fertile Crescent system, food circles or foodsheds.

Be thankfol for what you have and that life is good. God may be great but
that is another story :-)

Bon nuit,

LL
