Dominic,

I too am interested in this concept as I find the clorine to be bad news,
since I have turned 40, I get headaches from even being near the stuff. I
recently dug a pond and I have been busy building my strawbale home so I
have not had time to set up a system. I am interested in how clean can a 1/4
acre pond be kept with natural filtration. I don't see plants floating in
the pond to be adequate. I have had to do extensive research for my
greywater system we are working on with our local state of WI and learned a
few things though I have much more to learn. For the pond I have considered
running all the water into a skimmer box with a big filtration bag and then
pump it to a nearbye stream/bog made for this purpose. I was thinking of
lining it with a membrane or a dense clay and having it lined with
filtration plants. Then as the water approaches the pond it would fall over
moss covered rocks into the pond. The problem with this design is the water
should originate from the bottom of the pond as this is where oxygen
deprived water is. The skimmer grabs the water from the surface.

Another design is similar to what the new Alchemy folks(John Todd) have done
with their restorers in cleaning up highly polluted waters. They pull the
water up from the bottom with a windmill and have it land on the top of
their multi-tiered raft that has a series of catchment cells that hold the
higher and lower order plants. I like this design as it pulls the water from
the right place.
I have thought about having a skimmer in the pond just to keep the surface
clean and then use a pump to move the water to either the restorer or a
stream/bog.

I don't think I would limit myself to just a reed bed as there are so many
different plants with beauty and capacity to do the job. I am also
interested in this technology being used with swimming pools and would love
to learn about success efforts. Please keep me informed and I will try to
share what I know.

I am working with a solar guru and we are building his design of a hybrid
for solar capacity for our home. They look similar to a standard solar
collector yet reflectors are incorporated and solar cells. So each unit can
produce as much hot water as a standard collector and about 150 watts. This
could work nicely in your situation for heating your pool and powering your
pumps. There is some really exciting stuff coming out of the Australian
National University. They have a protype hybrid unit they are licensing and
it looks great 35 to 1 concentration ratio. They have also recently
announced the Silver Cell which two cells will generate 140watts where 60
cells are currently required and for less money and with thin cell
technology-Amazing!!!! Just do a google search on Silver Cell.
Dear friends
I have not had any experience of reed bed systems but am shortly moving from
the UK to Spain and am planning to set up a small sustainable smallholding
with straw-bale housing and I was hoping to create a reed-bed filtered
swimming pool.
Has anyone any experience or idea where I might source information.
Many thanks
Dominic Dring

Reply-To: permaculture@lists.ibiblio.org

Hello from Graham of Land & Liberty- this is just an invitation to join the
Land & Liberty email list at Yahoo! Groups- it's pretty low traffic list (I
think I've only used it to send out one email since last June!), but will
keep you up to date with announcements of any new publications, permaculture
courses, articles, changes to the Land & Liberty website at
www.landandliberty.co.uk and so on, as well as any interesting developments
at my allotment forest garden project.

Anyway, if you are interested, to subscribe send a blank email to;
landandliberty_news-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

or visit; http://groups.yahoo.com/group/landandliberty_news/

It's also a one way list for announcements only, so you won't get loads of
argument and banter, although if that is your thing I also moderate another
list called 'Ecovegans & Earth Citizens', which is much more discussion
oriented, and which you can subscribe to via the Land & Liberty website.

Cheers for now, Graham Burnett

A nice pond (of swimmable size) with reeds (and other appropriate/useful
aquatic plants) growing in it would seem to fill the bill...?

Such pools are the subject of an article called 'Clear Swimming' in an
Australian Magazine called The Organic Gardener. Volume: Summer 2002. It's a
great article and very tempting in Australia at this time of the year!
Unfortunately for our situation in semi-arid South Australia, the venomous
snakes would also find it very attractive.

They cite that an international consultant in sustainable environmental
design called Michael Littlewood, based in Devon in the UK, is a leading
proponent of such systems. His contact is given as:
michael@ecodesign.freeserve.co.uk

good luck,
flick
