CALL FOR PAPERS

Submissions are invited for an edited volume on:

THE ROLE OF RURAL-URBAN LINKAGES IN SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

There are a host of barriers to sustainable agriculture and
sustainable communities, often the same factors which prevent access
to food from those most in need. At the same time, there are also
opportunities and resources for building approaches to sustainable
agriculture that are particular to the contexts of specific rural and
urban regions. The quest is to build and/or enhance links among
existing and potential sustainable agriculture activities and the
people of those places and communities - especially in the face of an
increasingly globalised food system. These sorts of specific links or
processes are suggestive of more general strategies and mechanisms
which could be used to create sustainable agriculture in local
communities around the world.

Of particular interest for this volume are case studies describing
and evaluating innovative agriculture projects that link the rural and
the urban: the people, places, ecosystems, and agencies or processes
that constitute these projects. Case studies may be from a single
region or may compare projects in more than a single location, though
the expectation is that every submission will yield general as well as
specific insights.

Articles may address this theme through one or more of the following
topics:

· farmer's markets
· 'regional food movements'
· permaculture and/or ecovillages
· community shared agriculture (CSA's)
· community gardens
· food to table movements
· aboriginal peoples food projects
· organic agriculture
· health foods and natural remedies
· consumer-driven shifts in food quality
· gender and local food system concerns
· resistance to the global food system, etc.

Theoretical pieces based on academic literature related to themes and
subjects that link rural-urban agricultural initiatives are also
welcome.

Submission Guidelines:

Articles should be approximately 15 pages (3750 words), in
WordPerfect or
Word and IBM compatible.
AT SOUND REASONABLE? AGAIN, WE WILL HAVE TO SEE WHAT WE GET.

To be considered, abstracts (or completed papers, if available)
should be
received by:
September 6, 2002.
