Permaculture: The Principles Behind the Practice
1-day Advanced Permaculture Theory Workshop
with David Holmgren
Sunday 25th August

Permaculture is based on design principles derived from the observation
of both natural systems and pre industrial sustainable cultures. Although
the initial applications have been to gardening and agriculture,
permaculture design principles have broader relevance to the built
environment and beyond to re-organisation of economic and community
structures. These principles continue to evolve through use, teaching and
insight as more elements of the low energy future emerge.

This workshop explores permaculture principles as an evolving theoretical
framework for permaculture action. David will present his current
distillation of permaculture principles as outlined in *The Essence of
Permaculture* (see website) and expounded in his new, soon to be
published book *Permaculture: Principles and Pathways To Sustainability*.

Discussion and feedback will cover both conceptual issues and debates
about ecological and systems theory foundations of PC as well as
communication issues about how to organise and present permaculture
principles.

This workshop is for permaculture teachers, designers and activists
familiar with permaculture concepts and applications. It is primarily
intended to expand understanding of the conceptual foundations of
permaculture rather than explore technical solutions in permaculture
development or communication.

Participants are encouraged to read at least *The Essence of
Permaculture* so that discussions can proceed from a common base.

ABOUT DAVID HOLMGREN
David Holmgren is best known as the co-originator with Bill Mollison
of the permaculture concept following the publication of
"Permaculture One" in 1978. Since then he has written several more
books, developed three properties using permaculture principles,
conducted workshops and courses in Australia, New Zealand, Israel,
Italy, France, Britain, Germany, Denmark and Sweden. He has consulted
and supervised on urban and rural projects in Australia and New
Zealand. Within the growing and international permaculture movement,
David is respected for his commitment to presenting permaculture
ideas through practical projects and teaching by personal example,
that a sustainable lifestyle is a realistic, attractive and powerful
alternative to dependant consumerism. At home (Hepburn Permaculture
Gardens in central Victoria), David is the vegetable gardener,
silviculturalist, builder and general fix it man. The Fryers Forest
Eco-village, also in central Victoria, has been his prime focus in
recent years, where he performed many roles including planner and
project manager. As well as constant involvement in the practical
side of permaculture, David is passionate about the philosophical and
conceptual foundations for sustainability which are the focus of two
books currently in preparation.
