Permaculture: An Introduction to Self-Reliant LivingWith Toby Hemenway
and Jude HobbsMay 23-27, 2002Sitka Center for Art and Ecology
Otis, Oregon (North of Lincoln City)Explore the fundamentals of
permaculture, a whole-systems method of design that uses ideas,
strategies, and techniques from organic gardening, natural building,
appropriate technology, ecology, and other disciplines to create
sustainable places to live. There will be lectures, small group
activities, discussions, a field trip, and hands-on projects. We will
cover skills for designing homes, gardens, and communities using
sustainable and holistic principles. Other topics included: permaculture
ethics and methods; observation skills, site analysis, and pattern
recognition; soil stewardship; water harvesting, storage and management;
sustainable forestry and tree crops; appropriate technology and housing;
urban permaculture and village design; and community building
strategies.
Toby Hemenway is the author Gaia's Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale
Permaculture (Chelsea Green, 2001), and is associate editor of
Permaculture Activist. His writing has appeared in magazines such as
Whole Earth Review, Natural Home, and Fine Gardening.
Jude Hobbs is a horticulturist, permaculture designer, and instructor.
Since 1982, her firm, Cascadia Landscape Design, has focused on
environmental design solutions for urban and rural settings. She is the
author of A Guide for Multi-functional Hedgerows through Oregon State
University Extension Service.

Fee:
$395, plus a $10 materials fee This is a non-residential workshop.
