PERMACULTURE DESIGN COURSE
with Robyn Francis & guests at Djanbung Gardens

The Earthwise PDC at Djanbung Gardens covers the international PDC
curricullum, addressing all major climatic zones and attracts participants
from throughout Australia and overseas, creating a diverse and stimutating
social atmosphere of like-minded people.

You will receive a copy of Permaculture Education¹s PDC Handbook with over
100 pages of comprehensive notes and resource information prepared by Robyn
Francis.
Dynamic Interactive Learning includes field trips practical sessions and
access to the permaculture-in-action projects and systems at Djanbung
Gardens, Jarlanbah Permaculture Hamlet and the unique village of Nimbin.
Upon completion of the course you will receive a Permaculture Design
Certificate which entitles you to become a trainee permaculture designer.

Topics include
* Patterns and processes in nature and human culture & application to design
for sustainability
* Soil ecology & management, natural nutrients, mulches etc
* Water management planning, collection, storage and conservation,
earthworks and aquaculture
* Forest ecosystems and design of forests for food, forage, fibre, habitat,
conservation, wildlife, tree-crops and farm forestry
* Sustainable food producing systems for home gardens and small holdings
through to broad acre farmlands
* Integrated free-range and animal forage systems
* Design to reduce vulnerability to fire, drought & natural disasters
* Integrated pest & weed control
* Appropriate energy and resource conserving technologies and design,
renewable energy systems, and passive solar house design
* Bioregional & community development strategies, urban renewal, eco-village
design, community economics, legal structures, community gardens and city
farms

COST: Course fee includes tuition, course notes, excursions, lunches & some
evening meals.
A $100 deposit will secure your place.

NB Low income, students, unemployed etc may apply to do volunteer work for
a concession of up to 20% of course fee

DOING COURSES AT DJANBUNG GARDENS
The unique benefit of doing a course at Djanbung Gardens is that you can
immerse yourself in a total permaculture experience. Permaculture here is an
integral part of everyday life with a 5 acre living Œclassroom¹ of working
permaculture systems.
Quality training in an experiential environment is our hallmark, with a team
of experienced tutors lead by Robyn Francis.

You will enjoy international cuisine of delicious meals created with seasonal
produce fresh from the gardens. People with special dietary needs are
thoughtfully catered for including vegan, satvik (vedic) and gluten-free.

Next door to Djanbung Gardens is Jarlanbah Permaculture Hamlet, providing a
unique opportunity to experience a working Eco-village and see first-hand a
wide range of domestic permaculture homes and gardens, alternative building
techniques, different composting toilets and waste management strategies and
insights into community life.

At Djanbung Gardens you can enjoy the tranquility of a rural environment
with the convenience of close proximity and easy access to village facilities
including public phones, post office, ATM, laundromat, shops and other
village services.

ERDA TEACHING TEAM
Robyn Francis
Principal tutor for Permaculture Education, Robyn Francis is well known for
her extensive work in permaculture since 1984: as a teacher, designer,
presenter, writer, editor of the Permaculture International Journal ('87-92)
& founding director of Permaculture International Ltd. She has taught and
consulted in USA, Germany, New Zealand, India, Bali & many partsof Australia
including work with Aboriginal communities.
Robyn Francis¹ extensive design work has involved suburban edible landscapes,
self-sufficiency & commercial farms, community gardens, public landscapes,
rural communities & village development, in climates ranging from cold
temperate to arid & humid tropics, for grass roots individuals and businesses
through to Government Departments.
As a teacher she draws on this rich practical experience as well as the years
of organic gardening, herb production and small farming that preceeded her
permaculture work. Her experiential approach to learning as an active and
empowering experience emphases the practical applications of permaculture
ideals & principles.
In 1985 Robyn Francis received the Permaculture Community Service Award and a
Diploma of Permaculture Design . In 1995 she received the ABC Rural Woman of
the Year Award for NSW North Coast for her contribution to sustainable
agriculture and land use planning, and in 1996 received a Rivercare 2000
Award.
Robyn Francis is also known for her presentation of The Mandala Garden video
and author of the Mandala Garden book, and as a singer-song writer. In Œ96
she produced the Celtic Eightfold Year Garden Charts. In between everything
else, Robyn produces most of her own food, enjoys keeping poultry and
creating her permaculture paradise at Djanbung Gardens.

SPECIAL GUEST TUTOR:
MILES DURAND - Horticulture and Permaculture practitioner since 1968 in
Australia, New Zealand, Bangaladesh, Nepal and Israel. Permaculture Design
Cetificate 1983 with Bill Mollision, Permaculture Design Diploma [Education]
1986. Perth . Miles has taught Permaculture and Horticulture with TAFE since
1986 and is presently the Horticulture trainer for Kimberley College of TAFE,
Halls Creek Campus [1998-2001] engaged in training courses on remote and
isolated Aboriginal Communities.Founding member and director of the
Permaculture Institute of WA .
Miles has a particular interest in Drylands design systems and their
practical implimentation and lasting impressions of visiting 2, 000 year old
dryland Agriculture / Horticulture systems in the Negev desert .

REGULAR PDC GUEST TUTORS:

Janelle Schafer - Janelle draws on her background in horticulture, practical
experience in permaculture and living on the land on an intentional
community. Janelle has lectured for TAFE and been a regular guest tutor at
Djanbung Gardens for 5 years
Peter Hardwick - key player in establishing the bushfoods industry & research
into Aboriginal ethno-botany
Peter Gould - Sub-tropical Farm Forestry, sustainable tree cropping
systems,bush regeneration & broad forestry issues
Jude Fanton - Co-founder of Seed Savers, and wealth of knowledge and
experience in seed saving, genetic biodiversity & ethnobotany Jude is an
ocassional guest tutor for courses at Djanbung
