27th and 28th October 2001 Rainforest Resort
3 km south of Post Offfice, opposite the Golf Course, Byron Bay Australia
$20 one day, $30 for two

CONFERENCE PROGRAMME

SATURDAY
SESSION ONE
9am Registrations and welcome, arrangements for the weekend - Jude Fanton

9.15am Conference theme
- Michel Fanton

9.30am Raylee Delaney, herbalist and botanical painter, on Flower Essences

10am Barry Waters, long time seed saver, on Sowing in Season

10.30am Rebecca Lines Kelly, Environmental Officer in Ag Dept, on What Seeds Need from Soil

11am Morning tea

SESSION TWO
11.30 Divide into those interested in Local Markets
and those who would like to do outside activities. At 12.30 - travel to The Seed Centre - carpools may be necessary
Group 1: Forum on Local Markets - Michel and Hogan Gleeson, market gardener and organiser of Lismore Organic Farmers' Markets
Group 2 - travel to The Seed Centre for a tour with Seed Savers' interns, Pat and Marian. Seed Exchange open in Seed Bank from 11.45am to 1.45pm.

12.45 Lunch at Seed Centre 13 Old Bangalow Rd, Byron Bay 2 km south of Post Office

SESSION THREE
1.45 to 3pm: Choose between four workshops - see below

SESSION FOUR
3pm to 4.15pm Choose between three workshops & Group 1 from this morning has a tour.

WORKSHOPS - AT SEED CENTRE
Seed collecting and cleaning - intern, Marian, and volunteer, Kate, on front verandah
Seed banking - seed banker, Esabel, and intern, Pat, in seed bank, recording, storage, germination testing, distribution
Planning a biodiverse market garden - Michel & Hogan on lower flat area at Seed Centre
Growing, harvesting and cooking greens - Jude on back verandah

4.15pm Afternoon tea at The Seed Centre

4.30 Finishing session at The Seed Centre - finish at 5pm

8pm Slides of Seed Savers' projects overseas at 8pm at The Rainforest Resort

SESSION TWO
11.30 Divide into those who are interested in Local Seed Networks
and those who would like to do outside activities
Group 1: Forum with presentations from local seed networks including Beelarong Community Farm, Morningside, Brisbane - Michel Fanton
Group 2: Making an Instant Garden at the Rainforest Resort - Jude Fanton

12.45 - Lunch at The Seed Centre

SESSION THREE
1.45 to 3pm: Choose between four workshops

3pm to 4.15pm Choose between four workshops

WORKSHOPS - AT SEED CENTRE
Beginners' seed saving- Pat and Jude - front verandah
Advanced seed saving - Michel - back verandah
Bamboo - species, maintenance, harvesting and preparation -Julianne Hartmann, Mullumbimby bamboo farmer - meet near large bamboo in front of house - if raining gather in back shed
Frog Pond Making - Keith and Leanne - in the middle of the road side of block
Harvesting exotic plants and preparing them - Tippy Heng, chef at Dish Restaurant - yet to confirm

4.15pm Afternoon tea

4.30 Finishing session at The Seed Centre - finish at 5pm

MONDAY
Tour of a suburban intensive food garden in Suffolk Park and a Bamboo Farm south west of Mullumbimby
Meet at 9.15am at The Seed Centre to go to Suffolk Park by 9.30 where you will be for one hour, then on to Mullumbimby by 11am where you will meet Marian at the Cornucopia Nursery which is next to the Poinciana Cafe. Drive to farm by noon.
Take a picnic lunch to have at the Farm and plan to leave by 2.30pm.
20 species bamboos for sale at very reasonable prices.
$10 for the day
