EVENT: Building with mudbricks
DATE: 8-9 September and ongoing dates
VENUE: Earthways, NSW - 150km north of Sydney in the Wollombi Valley

COST: $160 or $300/couple; deposit $30 each non-returnable required to

Content -
Reasons for using earth - environmental, economic, thermal, aesthetic.
Techniques- adobe, pise, pressed earth blocks.
Why mudbricks - advantages over other techniques.
Performance and testing - strengths, serviceability &council requirements.
Practical sessions - making and laying mudbricks, finishing walls
Viewing of mudbrick building under construction.

Accommodation - limited shared dormitory facilities available (mattress and
pillow provided-please bring other bedding) - extra $30; otherwise bring own
tent/van etc.

Vegetarian food is included in the fee and will be provided from Friday
evening to Sunday afternoon tea.

Brian Woodward trained as an architect at Oxford and has 25 years research
and practical experience in mudbrick. He directed the Earth Construction
Research Unit at N.S.W. University for 4 years. Now engaged full time in
design and teaching in earth.

EVENT: Keeping Chooks in the Suburbs
DATE: Sunday 9 September; 12-4:30pm
VENUE: Ecoliving Centre/ UNSW community garden at the rear of 12 Arthur St,
Randwick, Sydney.
DETAILS: Breeds, their characteristics, where to get them, what to feed them

and where to get it, natural chicken health, design issues for chook houses
and runs, Council regulations. A full selection of books and other materials
will be available for inpection and borrowing. Finish by helping to
construct a chook tunnel into a new orchard chicken run. Orders for chooks
of many varieties will be taken. Lunch and afternoon tea provided. Small
fee - Bookings required. Organised by the Ecoliving Animal Systems Team.

EVENT: Birds and the Bees
DATE: Sunday 30 September; 12-4:30pm
VENUE: Ecoliving Centre, UNSW community garden at the rear of 12 Arthur St,
Randwick - eastern sydney
DETAILS: Introductory Backyard Bee Keeping plus Birdscaping your Garden.
Birds and bees carry out essential functions in the garden. Their basic
biology plus their role in your garden ecology will be covered, as will
plants and other features that you can introduce to encourage them in.
Native stingless bees and the more common Honey Bees will be looked at. A
hive, bees and bee keeping equipment will be available for demonstration.
Where to get them, what it takes to be successful, support groups. What is
involvd in gathering your own honey plus tasting of local honey. Lunch and
afternoon tea provided. Small fee - Bookings required. Organised by the
Ecoliving Animal Systems Team.

EVENT: Permaculture Designers Gathering 2001

DETAILS: The Designer's Gathering is a forum for permaculture teachers to
share teaching techniques and materials, discuss matters relating to
education, the Permaculture Institute/s, teacher registration and course
accreditation. Open forum, presentations, workshops & discussion groups.

The gathering consists of -
- Permaculture Teachers Forum; Friday 19 October
- Permaculture Practitioners Gathering; 20-21 October
A chance to catch up on the movement, follow up discussions and issues
raised at the last gathering and develop strategies to take permaculture
into the 21st century. Time will be allocated for PDC graduates to present
their work for endorsement for their Pc Diploma application.

EcoLogic: Creating a Sustainable Future
The Powerhouse Museum (Sydney) has a new permanent exhibition about the
future of life on earth ­ it will examine how the consumer choices we make
every day are pushing the ecosystems that support us to the brink of
collapse. But rather than dwelling on the problems, the exhibition will
