On Thursday March 15 at 7:30 p.m., author and environmental activist Julia
Butterfly Hill will speak on "How I Became 'The Woman in the Tree'" at the
United States Fish and Wildlife Service's National Conservation Training
Center (Shepherd Grade Road, Shepherdstown, West Virginia).
On December 10, 1997, 23-year old Julia Butterfly Hill climbed into a
1,000-year old redwood tree in Humboldt County, California. She stayed
there for just over two years to protect the tree and the surrounding old
growth forest from timbering. While protesting the cutting of the redwoods,
she weathered several coastal storms and survived attempts to force her
from the tree. She will relate her experiences to local issues and take
questions from the audience.
The talk is free and open to the public. No tickets are required. It is
part of a monthly series of "Conservation & Community" public lectures held
at the National Conservation Training Center.
This talk is supported by The Friends of the NCTC. For more information
