PLEASE DISTRIBUTE AS WIDELY AS POSSIBLE!

You all are invited to take action against the
World Economic Forum meeting in Cancun, February 26, 2001:

[Translated from flier distributed in San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas,
Mexico]

The World Economic Forum is an organization made up of businesspeople,
intellectuals, and government leaders that come together to make decisions
that affect all of us without listening to the voices of the people.
Important decisions, like what we eat and what medicine we take and whether
it is more important to make a fortune in the stock market or suck the life
of a human being working in a maquiladora.

Can we talk about democracy when these types of negotiations take place
without the consent of the people?

The 26th of February the World Economic Forum will meet in Cancun to decide
the future of Mexico.

These negotiations that do not take the needs of the people into
consideration, force us to take to the streets and protest against the World
Economic Forum this February 26th in Cancun.

What is the World Economic Forum?
The World Economic Forum emerged in Davos, Switzerland in 1971 as a business
initiative dedicated to the analysis of the world situation (the founding
members were 100 businesspeople); this Forum was the father if the WTO which
formed in 1982.  The WEF describes itself as "independent, impartial, and
non-profit" as well as "the first global business, political, and
intellectual society."  The WEF is an international group more powerful than
the World Bank, the G8, the IMF and other known groups.

During the last 5 years the WEF has converted into the primary site of
discussion between main political and business leaders about how to manage
the globalization process and above all, how to sell the project/plan to the
entire world!

The WEF organizes regional meetings and one major world meeting held
annually in the Swiss Alps (Davos, Switzerland).  The elite of the elite
(those who can afford the registration fee) come together during those
meetings to reach consensus on "key" issues including: what type of economic
policies should be implemented, what stance should be taken on important
geo-political, and how critics of global policies should be answered.  Other
more important issues that affect our daily lives are also addressed: what
news to disseminate, what type of food to promote, what type of education
there should be, and in what conditions we should work.

Who are the Members of the World Economic Forum?

Think of any industry and its dominant businesses are represented in the
World Economic Forum: oil (Exxon, Shell), autos (Ford, GM, Mitsubishi),
computers (Microsoft, IBM, Dell), media (Time Warner, Reuters, Televisa,
AT&T), electronics (Sony, Toshiba), pharmaceuticals (Roche, Sandoz, Dupont),
banking (Citibank, BBV), agriculture (Novartis, Monsanto), beverages
(Coca-Cola, Bacardi, Modelo), food (Nestl, Bimbo, Kraft, McDonalds),
garment (Nike), tobacco (British American, Philip Morris), and other
corporations with dark histories in labor, environmental and human rights
issues.

The groups that belong to the Forum include: founding members, corporations
from key industries, upcoming business leaders, major media representatives,
world renown experts in politics, the economy, science, technology and
social issues, leaders from the "new generation," public figures from local
governments, international organizations and distinguished figures from the
art world.
