Workshop One: BASIC BIODYNAMICS
Maybe you¹ve had some exposure to biodynamics and know it as a method
of agriculture that, using special preparations, gets yields comparable to
conventional but of much higher quality. The aim of the biodynamic method is
for the farm to achieve self-sufficiency in terms of inputs. It won¹t achieve
this in machinery, but just cutting out seed, fertilizer, and some irrigation
goes a long ways toward making a farm self-sufficient. By imparting patterns
biodynamic farmers stimulate the organizational food web in the soil, improve
the organizational patterns expressed in photosynthesis, fruiting and
ripening, and intensify the ebb and flow of sap within the plant.
Extra sugar is manufactured in the leaf, and the sap carries this to
the roots where it is exuded as food for the soil food web. Between minerals
and nitrogen, mycorhyzae and azotobacters supply a rich, sophisticated mix of
nutrients to be absorbed by and passed up to the growing tip--chelated
minerals and nitrogen in the form of amino acids rather than salts. The
result is that crops get better nutrition and yield better even though no
fertilizers--especially no nitrogen fertilizers--are used. This also makes
herbicides and insecticides unnecessary.
With this in mind Workshop One will deal with the basics of how
biodynamic agriculture works. Topics will include:

This workshop aims to rescue biodynamics from the realm of mystery
and introduce growers to how it works. In the past most biodynamic beginners
have followed rote procedures without understanding, which has led to many
mistakes and ineffective measures. With an understanding of how BD works
growers should get exciting results their first year of conversion.
Workshop Two: ADVANCED BIODYNAMICS
In the time since Rudolf Steiner¹s death biodynamics has experienced
little progress. it¹s a running joke that goes like this:
Question: How many anthroposophists does it take to change a light
bulb?
Answer: No one knows. Steiner didn¹t give any indications.
Near the end of his agriculture course Steiner says, ³In these
lectures, I have only been able to supply certain guidelines, of course, but
I am sure that they will provide a foundation for many different experiments
extending over a long period of time, and that they will lead to brilliant
results if worked into your agronomical practices on an experimental basis.
That should be a guideline for dealing with the material presented in this
course.²
Biodynamics needs to deal with all that¹s developed since Steiner¹s
death. We need to change the lightbulbs without reference to Steiner.
Traditional methods of biodynamics involve a stirring and spraying of
preparations that takes major investment of time, labor and resources. Nor is
it more than wasted effort if this isn¹t done with consumate skill. For
farmers with 15 and 16 hour days this doesn¹t even bear thinking about. Not
one in a thousand has any hope of getting there. Farmers¹ economic pressures
are far greater now than in Steiner¹s time and there have to be cheaper,
better ways.

objective feeling of the world.² As some have put it, with biodynamics it
really is true what we think we grow.
The central aim of biodynamic agriculture is to bring our farms into
self-sufficiency where we cease to buy in while we achieve highest quality.
This liberates farm from forced input costs and forced sales.
