Press Release, for immediate publication and posting:

FARM SCHOOL OPENING IN THE
SHENANDOAH VALLEY

Good Earth Farm, Buena Vista, Virginia, in partnership with Good Earth
Publications, is pleased to announce the opening of its farm school and
research internship program. Andy Lee and Patricia Foreman are the new
co-directors.

Five research internships are available in 1999. Internships focus on
free-range poultry, organic market gardening, applied permaculture and
ecological farm design, intensive rotational grazing and composting. A
combination of hands-on learning, self-designed study and professional
workshops ensures an exciting, well-rounded educational experience.
Internships
run from March to December and include housing, food grown on the farm, and a
weekly stipend. College credits may be available from participating colleges
and universities.

During 1999 the Good Earth Farm School will host weekend and week-long courses
in house-building, market gardening and greenhouse fish farming, chicken
tractors and free range poultry, applied permaculture and ecological farm
design.

The inaugural course, March 1 to 6, is Designing and Building the Unplugged
Permaculture Cottage. Participants will learn how to plan and construct a
simple, inexpensive and easy to build house. They will also help design and
build a free standing greenhouse.

On April 9-11 students will spend an intensive weekend with Andy Lee learning
how to Design and Create a Profitable, Organic Market Garden and Permaculture
Greenhouse.

On May 26-29 course attendees will learn about Permanent Agriculture;
Designing
Our Farms for a Future That Matters, with Joel Salatin and Andy Lee. Joel is
the author of Pastured Poultry Profits, Salad Bar Beef, and You Can Farm. He
and his family own Polyface Farm where they raise poultry, beef, pork, rabbits
and vegetables to sell to nearly 400 customers. Course participants will tour
Polyface Farm.

>From June 24 to 26 is Chicken Tractors and Free Range Turkeys. Students will
learn how to design and build a profitable poultry enterprise on their own
land. This course is being repeated on August 26 to 28, and again on October
28
to 30.

Good Earth Farm is the 41-acre research and development arm of Good Earth
Publications. It is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains just
6
miles from historic Lexington, Virginia. The farm school’s focus is to help
participants become more self-reliant through enabling them to produce their
own food and shelter. Good Earth Farm raises heritage breeds of free-range
chickens and turkeys, pastured Tamworth pigs and Boer meat goats, as well as
market gardens. The farm sells all of its products to local families. A 3600
square foot former sheep barn will soon house a training space, commercial
kitchen, bathrooms, and a USDA inspected poultry processing facility.

Farm and training director, Andy Lee, majored in communications at Goddard
College and is a graduate of the Permaculture Institute in Australia with a
focus in ecological design and sustainable systems. He is the author of
BACKYARD MARKET GARDENING; the Entrepreneur’s Guide to Selling What You Grow.
He and Patricia Foreman are co-authors of CHICKEN TRACTOR, The Permaculture
Guide to Happy Hens and Healthy Soil as well as the upcoming TURKEY TRACTOR,
The Grower’s Gobbler Guide. Andy has over 25 years of adventures to share in
market gardening, logging and sustainable wood lot management, house building
and organic farming. He owns Tiny House Company and is a licensed residential
contractor in Virginia.

Patricia Foreman has undergraduate degrees from Purdue University in genetics
and nutrition, and animal sciences. She holds a Masters in Public
Administration from Indiana University and a PD in Pharmacy and is a Fulbright
Scholar. Pat has traveled extensively throughout the world as a primary health
care trainer for WHO, USAID and FDA.

Interested persons can call (540) 261-8775 between 9 and 5 EST for course
descriptions and internship application guidelines.
