Rene, leaf serrations are reported to serve to increase dripping to
hassen water removal from the leaf surface esp. for tropical rainforest
plants. Lobing has bee suggested as a means to aid air circulation and
thus gas exchange as well as for heat diffusion. I've looked briefly in
Fahn's Plant Anatomy and Soule's Horticultural Morphology and did not
see much on serration. Probably need a good plant morphologist whos up
to date to provide answers. Lee Barnes
