with Alan Reeves and Scott Pittman.
Russian stove is one of the most efficient and enviromentally friendly
masonry stove, which takes advantage of a thermal-mass principle used for
centuries in Northern Europe. Unlike a conventional fireplace, which sends
warm air out the chimney, a kachelofen soaks up the fire's heat and releases
warmth slowly and gently long after the fire is gone. The Russian fireplace
uses wood no larger that 3" in diametr, and very little of it - so it is
possible to use managed coppice forest, as well as utilize elm, russian
olive, tamarisk and other exotics.
The workshop will start on Friday, August 14th, at 9.00 with a short
lecture, theoretical and practical information, with a focus on hands-on
experience. This day we will build with Alan the fire box and the chambers.
Saturday we will start outside shell and set the damper and doors. As we
proceed Alan will explain technique, applications, designs, give advice what
to avoid and answer questions. Varios literature and articles will be
presented.
Alan Reeves is a local experienced fireplace master, he has 27 years
experience in masonry, 19 years building Russian style stoves, with total
number of fireplaces ne nas built more that 800.
Scott Pittman, one of the country's leading permaculture designers and
teachers will be hosting the workshop on his property, where he has
implemented various permaculture design ideas - constructed wetlands with
chinampa, farming project, straw-bale buildings, indoor black/gray water
treatment system. Short tour on the property will be hold after the workshop.
Organic meals will be provided for lunch only. Swimming and resting in shade
on the 2 acres pond after work and during the breaks. Workshop tuition $150.
Overnight accomodation for out-of town participants is available if arranged
in advance.
Please contact Scott or Arina Pittman at 505-455-0270 or at
