As near as I can tell, Amazon is trying to patent what PIW more or
less is going to do. Specifically they are trying to patent the
"Personalized selection and display of user-supplied content to
enhance browsing of electronic catalogs"
Currently on the front page of slashdot:

things came to a head.
They are still 'trying to patent' i.e. its not patented yet.
Plus its not a catalogue, were not trying to sell anything.
Its a friviolous pattent.
