What does this mean for PIW? Could we use this to our advantage in grant
proposals - making this free/open source before it gets patented? (Can you
tell what's on my mind, hehe)

As near as I can tell, Amazon is trying to patent what PIW more or
less is going to do. Specifically they are trying to patent the
"Personalized selection and display of user-supplied content to
enhance browsing of electronic catalogs"
