2. Listserv on the Website
Related, Chad asked about having more content on the website. There’s a few topics that have come up on this list that have been very interesting and potentially valuable for our ‘audience.’ Perhaps we could post snippets of such discussions on the website and solicit feedback, through the listserv? For people who don’t want to read through all the listserv postings, but would like a general idea of what we discuss?

Create a collection of documents on the website, each with summaries of some
of the more interesting dialog we have had/are having and ......

I also thought we could have forums on the website, so users could discuss these issues – and usability issues as hg materializes. Forums might be redundant, seeing as we already have 2 listservs (pcplantdb and piw), but it might be useful to have the forums actually *on* the website? What do you all think?

.... use the piw list to further discuss these ideas and topics with
subscribers.
Having more than one list might mean that none of them get used effectively.
To keep feedback organized (especially for the benefit of searches of the
archives done directly on ibiblio or
through Google, or maybe even Google Scholar) ask people to pay special
attention to their message subject lines.

Mailman lists (piw and pcplantdb) allow users to download individual posts or
an entire month's worth in a single file.
This file is an ascii text Unix mail file and can actually be loaded into
one's mail client for further browing and refining
(Mozilla, Netscape, Thunderbird and a few others, not OE), then
saved/exported as another Unix mail file for further processing.
It can also be edited in a text editor to remove unwanted posts; the
time-consuming way.
Then it can be converted on a Unix/Linux system, using Hypermail or mhonarc,
to a nice sortable mail2html archive.
Thesecould be added to the collection of list discussion topic summaries
(from any or our lists) in the PIW website.

Ex.:

TOPICS DISCUSSED

1. Industrial Ecology
a) discussion summary
b) mini mail2html message archive representing discussion
1] Oct-Dec
2] Jan-Mar
c) new ideas that could be explored regarding IE & PIW

2. GIS
a) summary
b) mini message archives
c) new ideas to think about

3. PIW as a resource to encourage farmers and corporations to transition to
more
sustainable farming practices and land use, a tool for farm and
operations planning
a) summary
b) message archives organized chronologically
c) options and ideas

4. How will PIW reach global users to serve their needs and solicit input
from them

I have done this with some of Elaine Ingham's posts to Sanet, see here in the
AgWiki from a link in the PC Wiki:

With Hypermail:

With mhonarc:

All of this is located at:

Another old one on soil quality:

If you really need more PIW forums, more Mailman lists would be good because
their archives are Google-searchable.
If Webforums (no email used) are wanted, phpBB is a really good way to go and
is easy to set up and maintain
and is very robust feature-wise. It is not much like CMS software like
TikiWiki but offers a few similar features
and is easy for users. Registered users can easily attach files (pictures,
etc.) to the messages they submit.
These are viewable in the archives. This might prove useful for broadening
the scope of discussion. The website admin
could perodically copy all pix attachments, from the directory where they are
archived, to another location where PIW visitors
can view the entire collection - these pics could be linked to individually
for other purposes. Maybe a shell script and cron job
could be used to automate this.

Style and Customisation
* Multiple styles available for the user to choose from
* Templates separated from the PHP code so that new layouts can easily be
created or integrated with your current site design
* Complete control of fonts and colours with cascading style sheets (CSS)
* Active community creating addons and specialised modifications
* Default style compliant with XHTML 1.0 and HTML 4.01 recommendations
from the W3C
Database Server Support
* phpBB uses a database abstraction layer to enable seamless support of
several database servers:
o MySQL 3.2x,
o PostgreSQL 7.x,
o Microsoft SQL Server 7/2000
o Microsoft Access (via ODBC)
o ...with more databases available in the future.

Here's a good example of a phpBB archive:

---------
I plan to install phpBB to use with my PC website, lists and PCWiki. It looks
less difficult than PHPWiki.
