Eric, I suppose your screen method would work, but the newspaper combine method is simple and fool proof. It allows the bees to mingle at their own speed. I have never had a problem with bees interacting aggressively while using the newspaper combine. The bees remove the newspaper and you don't have to manipulate the hive twice as you would with you proposed method. Personally I wouldn't make it more complicated for me or stressful for the bees than necessary.
