I should have mentioned that I will be giving a version of this same presentation to the Durham County Beekeepers Association on July 17th. Everyone is welcome to attend. Information is <here>.

Meredith,

The topic of the OCBA Monthly Meeting last September 2016 was Varroa mites (biology, history and treatments). We discussed oxalic acid at that time, along with other, more effective treatments.

I would be happy to answer any questions you may have off-list.

Is the application of oxalic acid something that can be discussed at one of our OCBA meetings?  In bee school, I learned about lots of the methods of dealing with varroa, but oxalic acid came along after I finished.  Maybe there are others out there in the same boat?

Thanks,
Meredith Friedrick

Rich,

The article <here> is getting a little old but the information is still relevant.

Whichever way you go, make sure you follow the EPA-approved application instructions <here> for treating Varroa mites with oxalic acid. The label is the law. There are a lot of you-tube recommendations out there (such as repeated applications) that not only are not covered by the label (i.e. illegal) and are very harmful to the bees. I've already heard of colony losses following late-season repeated applications this past year.
