Hello fellow beekeepers, We have a local Cedar Grove resident, a little ways from us, who saw bee traffic in corner of his shed on those warm days last week. He said they have been there since fall (or that's when he noticed them anyway), and he is anaphylactically
allergic to bees and would like them removed or he was going to "spray" them. I went to look at them last night, pulled up a board and those honey bees look like they had made themselves a nice cozy house under the floor boards in the corner of the shed.
I am a very green beekeeper with only 3 years experience and while a swarm would be within my capabilities, I don't want to screw something like this up. He would like them gone, sooner than later but is willing to wait until someone can remove them, especially
if it stays cold and he has less chance of getting stung. My assumption is that disrupting them at this time of year and trying to put them into a hive would be deadly to them. Can anyone tell me what the next steps would be? I have an extra hive I could use
with some drawn comb from a hive that was too small and died over the winter. Does this have to wait until warmer temps are here to stay? This young man has to use his shed everyday and is very afraid of having contact with these bees, especially with the
odd warm days when they are out foraging. Would anyone be willing to help me with removal?
Thanks so much, Nikki Mack |
