Erica, With regard to your Question #2 below - I hope that you will have no trouble finding your queen when you need to. But we all know queens hide when you are most in need of finding them. I am in the process of re-queening a defensive colony. I couldn't find the mean queen to kill her. Here is what Randall suggested as a last resort for those situations where finding the queen is essential.
With a defensive colony like mine, this technique will generate a constant cloud of unhappy, defensive bees, so I plan to start Step 4 with the frames where the queen is most likely to be found and continue to look for the queen on each frame as I shake the bees off. -JohnJohn Rintoul (919) 414-4071
