I would be concerned about putting
boric acid (borax) in the hive this way. Bees are known to feed
trapped hive beetles and could easily exchange the poison with
them.
I've seen people use the campaign sign strips without any sort of enhancement. They just cut them a few inches wide and stick them on the bottom board or inner cover. Beetles hide in the tunnels. The beekeeper periodically pulls the strips out and quickly plunges them in a bucket of soapy water. Bye bye beetles.
