I am reading "Dietary traces of neonicotinoid pesticides as a cause of
population declines in honey bees: an evaluation by Hill’s
epidemiological criteria"
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ps.3290/pdf
right now.
If you're interested in the bigger picture of pesticides in risk
assessments in agriculture, the introduction is a great read with lots
of excellent references. Even just reading the first two pages gives
some great background into the big picture of neonic use.
Interesting facts:
"In summary, the agricultural use of neonicotinoids is associated with
three separate modes of exposure for bees: direct exposure by
dispersal in particulate clouds during seed drilling; oral ingestion
of residues in guttation fluid of seedling maize; trace dietary
residues in nectar and pollen."
I didn't like the methodology of the paper, but the citations were pretty
good.
