I am new to beekeeping, but I will be placing 2 hives in my backyard on a third of an acre in Carrboro so this is a discussion topic that I can relate to. My lot backs up to a small creek and 14 acres of open woods so I am not overly concerned about my bees interacting with my neighbors. I talked to the neighbors on either side before I even enrolled in bee school. Both were enthusiastic, even the neighbor who is allergic to bees and keeps an EpiPen close by while he is working in his yard.

I agree with all of the previous comments/concerns, but I took a different path than that suggested by Marty. I have been talking to my non-adjoining neighbors. To a person they have been equally excited at the prospect of bees in the neighborhood. Two of them have expressed interest in becoming beekeepers. They have asked to observe installation of the package bees and want to be around when I open the hives for inspection. Of course, it helps that I have lived with these neighbors in many cases for 20+ years . . . and we live in Carrboro. As Marty noted we are a live an let live breed in Carrboro.

But my point is, by talking with the larger group of neighbors it is possible that you will find other wanna-beekeepers. At the very least it will give you an opportunity to educate your neighbors about the importance of bees in the environment. Suburban beekeepers should be encouraged.
