Since I'm a new beek and not sure how bees respond to thunderous applause,
I'd like to thank everyone in advance of our field day tomorrow (Todd, Lewis,
Geneva, all the bee school presenters, fellow students/bee buddies, mentors
and club members) - thank you all for making the bee school a really great
experience.

If you have lost the link:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=213654524739524945979.0004b61e928fae4542d0d&\
msa=0

To put your location on the map, click Edit (in red on the upper right of the
list of beekeepers), then enter your address in the bar to the right of
"GOOGLE".

When you have located your spot, (sometimes Google Maps isn't entirely
accurate and you have to go down the road a little way), click on the place
marker icon on the top of the actual map (it's in the middle between a hand
and a graph) and drag it to where you want it. If Google Earth is being
helpful, you can zoom in close enough to place your hive in its actual spot
in your yard.

When you let go, a box will pop up that lets you give your place a title and
a description.

There is a "placement icon" in the box. If you click on it, you can choose
the color you want to use for your placement indicator/balloon. (The
?natural group? are using green.)

If you hate how it looks in the list to the left of the map, you can click on
your spot in the list (I think new places are always on the bottom) and
"Delete" becomes an option and you can start over.

When you are happy with your balloon, click Done where Edit used to be.

Hello Beekeepers,
I need some help!? UNC Biology has a 3 frame observation hive that they
would
like to get re-established.? I gave them 3 frames about 4 years ago and
installed them.? I went back about 2 years ago and sold them another 3
frames
and installed them.? It's time for a new batch of 3 frames and I was
wondering
if someone who lives closer to to UNC would be willing to work with
them on
this.
?
The observation hive is in a basement classroom so installing them
invloves
hopping down in to a window well (seems like the window well is about 6
feet
deep) and having someone hand you the hive through the window.? Install
the bees
outside, then pass the observation hive back through to the inside.?
?
The folks that I have dealt with down there are super gracious and very
appreciative.? They say that the bees are a favorite of their students
and do
make quite an impression on them.? All I have done so far is simply
deliver the
bees and let them deal with them.? I believe if someone did a few
checks per
year, they may be able to extend the life of the hive past one or two
years.?
The 3 frame observation hive is tough for the bees to sustain.
?
Any takers?? Please contact Cathy Lohmann atclohmann AT email.unc.edu
[mailto:clohmann AT email.unc.edu] to set it up.? I'd also like to know
that it has
been handled so just let me know so I can mark it off of my list.
?
Thanks,
?
Lewis

I think I'm closest and I'd love the chance to help my alma mater out. I
don't have any experience with observation hives, tho. Can y'all clue
me in
to major issues, besides being too small to forage well?

Hello All,
With bee school winding down and new packages on the way, it's time to
get
serious?about?our mentoring program.?Folks who already have bees and
had a
mentor to help them along the path understand how important these
relationships
are.? I believe a new beekeeper with a competent mentor has a much
improved
chance of success.? If you had a mentor that helped you get on your
beekeeping
feet, now is the time to pay off that debt.? You can't repay your
mentor, but
you can?pay it forward [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pay_it_forward] .
?
I put together a google map to try to help folks connect.? So far I
have been
impressed with the participation.? The map includes over 60 folks and
hundreds
of hives.? The map has nearly 7000 views so far.? We have about 13
folks who say
they are willing to mentor, 10 folks who are looking for a mentor/bee
buddy, and
40 folks who I would describe as "undeclared".? They have entered their
location
and some information, but have not clearly said "I will mentor" or "I
need a
mentor".
?
If you have entered your information on the map, I hope you will stop
back in
and read over what you have entered.? If you are willing to mentor, say
that in
your description.? If you are looking for a mentor or a bee buddy, say
that in
your description.? Also, please check your location and verify that your
placemarker is still in the correct location.? I believe some may have
been
inadvertantly moved around as folks were editing the map.
?
The map may be found

athttp://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=213654524739524945979.0004b61e928fae4542d0d&msa=0
?
If you need help, I'll do my best.
?
Thanks,
?
Lewis

I don't have much experience either, but I did get to play with the 5
frame
observation hive at Chestnut Ridge for a couple of years.?Chris
Richmond is
currently taking that one on. ?It's actually outside so it's easier to
maintain.? It gets stocked in the spring and the bees are removed in
October
(unless the colony has already collapsed).? Hive beetles were certainly
an
issue.? Keeping it covered with something to keep the light out when
not in use
seems to be important as well.? Having a support hive that you can pull
resources from as needed is important as well
?
Hopefully others with good experience will chime in.
