Honey Crisp does well here, too. I live on the IL-WI border, north or Rockford, IL. This year, the tree is loaded, more apples than I've ever seen. Wealthy and Ashmead's Kernel are loaded, too. All are great tasting.

Honeycrisp does beautifully for me in SW WI

Steve H. HC has saved Northern orchardist. Hats off to Dave Bedford, the U of MN fruit breeder for that one (I still like Keepsake better).

I have Zestar in my orchard here in the Loess Hills of western Iowa, Zone 5.
I would have to say it is a bug magnet and basically insipid in flavor. I
would assume that we get too hot during the summers for it to do well. I
never have tried Honeycrisp because I assume it would be the same.

Howdy all,

I grew Zestar in southwest Wisconsin for nearly 10 years. It's a beautiful
apple--- it was also a bug magnet and absolutely insipid here. I cut my
trees out a couple years back. I've had it in several other orchards and
thought it was great. They all had fairly heavy clay soil. My dirt is
alkaline and sandy. I can't think of any other things that would account
for the difference.

Congratulations. Not surprised Zestar sells well, it is a superior
apple and much more adaptable than Honeycrisp. To me, it is a step up
from William's Pride flavor-wise, but WP may be the most beautiful
apple I grow. Must be tough to manage commercially with all the pickings,
though.

Why do you use Captan instead of myclobutanyl? The SI's require only a
couple sprays to eliminate scab (and CAR) in orchards I manage, and
don't wash off once they set for an hour or two.

In a commercial orchard it is probably best to combine Captan with an
SI to delay scab immunity to the SI and to splash fungicide on new
growth when it rains between sprays. More trees, more pest pressure,
based on my observations.
