Many insects do not enjoy flying in a strong breeze. I use a box fan to keep flies away from my livestock.
I like the application for tomatoes.
If only we had cheaper energy. The south would be transformed for growing fruit!

As an aside I believe that the use of a box fan has reduced the incident of
fungal diseases on my heirloom tomato crop. I usually grow 39-80 plants
and I found the fan useful for drying the plants off after a rain.
And, drum roll, I have found that a box fan makes an excellent mosquito
repellent. It takes a little getting use to, so you do not block your breeze
and expose yourself to attack but as long as I move toward the fan I found
the mosquitoes do not bite me.
