When grafting in the field on larger tree stocks I have
always brought along a clay based compound that is easy to
mend at even as low as 40F. "Duct Seal" is the trade name
and this can be supplied at close to a dollar a pound at
electrician supply stores.

Yesterday I was helping grafting with apples on a table. We
were all volunteers with different ideas. But I found one or
two that were using plumbers putty which is actually easier
to mend on to smaller cleft grafts with a small stick or a
brush, which is some thing you can't do that way with duct
seal.

BTW all of the smaller cleft grafts were all banded over with
rubber bands which would cover the putty as well.

Rupert.
