Hi Sam,

In my travels I've had the opportunity to experience durian several times.
The first when in China. We walked past a fruit stand in a market and the
clerk spoke English. He asked if I wanted to buy one with a grin on his face.
I smelled it which had a distinct odor of limburger cheese. I turned up my
noise and said no thanks.

The second time was in Thailand where we were the personal home guests of a
Physician and US educated nurse wife for dinner. They served traditional
Thai dishes and for desert, local fruits both fresh and prepared. Their
kitchen servant had pealed the durian which without the smell was very
eatable.
Barbara didn't care for it.

As I understand it the USDA didn't permit durian being imported because of
the very unpleasant odor. There are breeding programs of durian to reduce
the limburger odor and improve taste and now the USDA has relaxed the
importation restriction of Durian.

So if any members of this net see one in a store, hold your nose and
explore it.

Hi Jim -

I'd be happy to send you seeds, but as I'm sure you know, the seedlings are
extremely unlikely to turn out like the parent tree. What the seedlings
should do well, however, is provide a highly compatible rootstock for the
selected parent trees, which I've read can be a problem when grafting
honeylocust. Given the former owner's experience with crop trees, I
strongly suspect these trees to be Calhoun, Millwood, and Torbett. I'm not
sure yet how many trees there are, as it was getting dark (and cold!) when
I located them and I didn't get a chance to really look around.

In case you've not grown honeylocust before, you'll want to watch this
brief video describing the effect of abrading and vinegar soaking on honey
locust seed germination: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PipKtFHwgL4. Wogsland
(the maker of the video) has some other interesting videos as well.

Email me your address and I'll snail mail you some seeds. You can find my
email address at the bottom of this page: http://goo.gl/wMldB
