I highly recommend the hazelnut varieties from Oregon State university
breeding program. In my experience, after almost 10 years, the plants have
done well in the colder part of Zone 5 here in NY's Hudson Valley and the
nuts are large and tasty. The only problem is squirrels, which I control by
letting the field vegetation grow high in a wide swathe around my planting
and with traps, a pellet gun, two dogs, and two cats.
