Yes, but it was still very hard to bite into and almost like chewing stone.
But made delicous cider. Required no additives like sugar. No quince
astringency. Gave samples to neighbors w/o telling them what it was and they
all
liked it.
I think one needs to define, "eating out of hand."

I gave some raw quince slices to some Turkish friends and they found =
them delicious. Apparently there is a tradition for eating raw quince =
in Turkey. It was my Aromatnaya variety. I personally found it wasn't =
all that different from eating one of those store-bought Anjou pears: =
hard, chewy, and not a lot of flavor. I expect the reason why some =
people like them raw is they have a pleasant lemony flavor that is =
unusual. I greatly prefer them cooked. Well, past tense here, my =
quince trees are all now rootstock for pears after I got tired of =
dealing with all the fireblight on them. The "Karps Sweet" variety is =
supposed to be better fresh eating and I did get a tree to try it out =
but never got a fruit off of it - the fruits were all horribly =
disfigured by quince rust.
