I wonder if the M.Nigra is easier. I think people fro CA propagate some the
Persian variety pretty easily.

Think I had one successful cutting of Silk Hope mulberry a couple of years
back - from a batch of midsummer greenwood cuttings.
I've mostly been attempting Illinois Everbearing and some M.rubra selections
- with no success.

If the 'top', grafted onto whatever rootstock, is withstanding your winters,
I'd suspect that it would do fine on it's own roots - and, if you had a
particularly bad winter that killed it back to the ground, any resulting
re-growth would then be IE, instead of a generic M.alba(or whatever).
