Gender doesn't matter, with respect to rootstock, so far as I'm aware. At
least, not with mulberries.
Species *may* be a factor - I'm re-starting, again, with a M.rubra selection
out of south AL that *seems* not to be long-lived on M.alba rootstock.
Myself and a fellow grower in NJ have both grown - and lost this selection 2
or 3 times; it'll grow well for 2 or 3 years then die out. May be merely
'too tender', for a zone 6 site, as it originates in zone 8, but I'm
attempting to root some cuttings and graft/bud it onto M.rubra and low on
M.alba so the graft union can be planted below grade.

Folks:
I'm thinking of transplanting a young mulberry to a more useful
location. If it survives and is male, then does anyone know if male
mulberries can accept female grafts?
Thanks,
Geoffrey Tolle
