Dan,I suspect that hardy (A. kolomicta) kiwi would work. The problem that I
have consistantly with the kiwis is that they break dormancy too early, and
then frost damages the buds. Growing under a tree might slow down bud break
enough to let them grow--anyway, the next ones I plant are going to be
shaded, to see if they do any better. You could possibly do alpine
strawberries as a ground cover around the vines. Theyseem not to need quite
as much sun as the standard ones. Muffy BarrettSouthern Wisconsin
---------- Original Message ----------
I have a narrow garden area about 7 feet wide along the north side of my
driveway which gets mid
morning to mid/late afternoon sun in the spring and the fall but, because
there is a tall maple tree
that is overhanging the garden, doesn't get much direct sun in the middle of
the summer. I had
wanted to plant fruiting trees or bushes there, but wondered what I could
plant there because of the
sunlight issue. Also, it would be better if they were 5 to 8 or 10 feet tall
or so because my wife
will want to plant some shorter plants in the front and the garden slopes
slightly down in the back
(north). I did have some currant plants started there and they got some
fruit, but they got kind of
lost behind other competing plants and didn't seem to have all that much
fruit or get as tall as
some I planted last year in a different area.
Are there some plants that either fruit early or later in the year that could
benefit from the
spring and fall sun that should reach them when the sun is not directly
overhead? Would the early
or late timing of fruiting help the ripening of fruit considering that they
may get more direct sun
early and late in the year?
This is for zone 4 in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota, probably zone 4b
most of the time, but I
have been going for plants that will take zone 4a at least.
I was thinking of Haskap, or perhaps even some Hardy Kiwi with a vertical
arbor. Maybe Aronia?
Any comments on these or any other suggestions?
Dan

FWIW, I've had a Danube for ... a while (the invoice didn't come immediately
to hand when I paged through the folder) that every winter is covered with
beautiful big fat flower buds. Every spring most of them fall off, but
plenty come through to give me a god crop, if they set fruit. But they
hardly do set fruit. I'm not sure that I've tasted more than a half dozen
cherries off of it in the 6 or 8 years that I've been anticipating them,
although some of that is the birds' fault. I'm sorely tempted to cut mine
down but so far I've continued giving it one more chance. Perhaps this year,
with the weird warm winter we've had........Muffy Barrett

I would like to know if anyone else has had productivity problems with the

Another early ripening "fruit" to include is rhubarb. It is easily ready to
harvest before Memorial Day here in northeast Colorado.

I remembered reading that a zinc application just before leaf drop made
flower buds more hardy, at
least for apricots. Perhaps that goes as well for cherries. I don't know if
this was a spray or not.
<http://www.oakcreekorchard.com/id82.html>
"Dr. Craig Ledbetter, the USDA-ARS apricot breeder in Fresno, CA, believes
that apricots have fairly
high zinc requirements and that a fall zinc application shortly before leaf
drop apparently makes
the flower buds more hardy and better developed come spring."
