Hello Dr. Parmar,
Just returned from a trip to Nikita Botanical Gardens in Yalta, Ukraine.
While there saw a very interesting hybrid, only one they know of, D. lotus x
kaki or kaki x lotus. They didn't know which was the seed parent. Most fruit
were seedless, but did have one seed in about 20% of fruits I opened. Low
astringency that were still on tree, but weren't astringent free. Would have
brought seed back but my import permit had expired and Phytosantary
Certificate impossible to get.
Can't help but wonder if a virginiana x lotus would make good rootstock!
Maybe back cross that hybrid to virginiana.
Anyone wanting lotus seed should be able to get from the USDA Diospyros
germplasm repository at Davis, CA. They have a small collection of D. lotus.
Jerry

Hello All=3B
=20
Not going to bore you to death with the results of all 20 varieties.
TWO of them have done really well=2C so I'll share my experience.
=20
Rhode Island Greening
If you're trying to impress someone with a 'special apple'=2C this is not y=
our fruit.
I've mentioned it here for other reasons=2C some more important than just b=
eing unique.
Mine was accidentally shipped to me in an order of Twenty Ounce Pippins fro=
m Miller's.
1. The tree growth is excellent. Fast=2C strong=2C good angles=2C gets =
big & strong fast.
2. The productivity is excellent. Even in an OFF year=2C it yields a cr=
op worth picking.
3. The fruits are large=2C solid=2C and ripen in late September in zone=
4.
4. The taste is very 'appley'=2C having also a good balance of sugar an=
d acid.
5. Last=2C and surely not least=3B I noticed a lot of attacks by AMF=2C=
but they failed to thrive!
No more than any other apple=2C but no Railroad Tracks / maggots.
6. PS They have kept really well in the garage for a month now.
=20
The lower branches became too heavy with fruit=2C on the ground=2C so I had=
to cut them off. This apple is adequate for fresh eating=2C and is unparal=
leled in the kitchen. Lots of productive good fruit per square foot of orch=
ard!
=20
Hidden Rose
I first bought these trees as a novelty item for roadside sales. The fruit =
is innocent looking from the outside=2C but have striking pink flesh on the=
inside. After harvesting them for 3 years=2C I can tell you that they are =
a decent / good apple on their own merit=2C regardless of the fancy colorin=
g. They taste zippy=2C with enough sugar to balance that off perfectly. Som=
e even have a 'unique' candy aroma. They ripen in late September=2C and whe=
n they begin to fall off the tree=2C PICK THE ENTIRE LOT !! As with the RIG=
above=2C I noticed some oviposit sites=2C but no maggots! Everyone that tr=
ied a sample slice=2C loved this apple.
=20
IMHO
