Chris,
The best time to look for new pawpaw patches is when the leaves turn yellow and you can spot the N. A. pawpaw trees from quite a distance. I don't know how much that you want to put into locating local pawpaws but I have good success in talking to loggers, local farmers, wildflower enthusiasts, extension agents, foresters, hunters, etc.

Subject: [NAFEX] Pawpaw Hunting
On the subject of pawpaws, I would like to go hunting for wild pawpaws and
collect local propagation material--does anyone have tips on how to go about
finding pawpaw stands? I am in coastal South Carolina at the confluence of
lowland marshes and managed woodlands. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Chris Carnevale
