There is one variety that is supposed to be self-fertile - Sunflower.
I am trying to grow some pawpaws here in NM. I've seen one tree that a friend has grown. It looked a little bleached out from the intense sun here but apparently is growing well for my friend. Don't know if it has fruited.
Lots of pawpaws in western NY. I've seen them in Ithaca, where they sometimes appear in roadside fruit stands in the fall.

Dan, I'm by no means a pawpaw expert, but my understanding is that
they are dioescious, meaning the male& female flowers are on separate
trees. I have all PA Golden growing. I had never tasted pawpaw fruit
& was fully expecting that they would be an "acquired" taste but I was
quite surprised by the custardy banana / mango flavor. The small pile
of fruits I got disappeared as soon as they were ripe. I now have
about 10 seeds from them recently sprouted in the greenhouse.
If you search pawpaw in the archives you'll come up with some other
short season varieties.
If you're in the twin cities you actually have a longer season than I
do here.....

That's very interesting. When I had looked online about pawpaws I got the__________________
impression that they
wouldn't fruit up here.
But, if you are growing then and getting fruit it may work here as well.
Also, global warming...
Don't you need two varieties to pollinate? What other varieties would work
here, do you think?

You should have a really good chance of growing varieties like PA
Golden in the zone 4 part of MN. I'm in SW Wisc& have been growing
them for about 10 years. Got my first fruit last year& have about
the same number of fruit this year.

Great article Sam. When I was in India, the Custard Apple (which I believe
is similar to Pawpaw),
was a favorite.
Too bad we can't grow them in Minnesota.
