I had the same experience when growing them - at least I think. We had them
in partial shade and the flavor was good, but none in the sun for
comparison. I like hearing this, though.

I have Nankings growing in 4 locations / settings & I detect slight
differences of tart/sweet in ripe berries depending on location.  The
trees I have growing completely under the shade of a huge Silver maple
seem to be the most flavor & the sweetest.

"Yuk" to la comida de Mexico? It's wonderfully varied: one of the four
"great cuisines," along with Chinese, Italian and French - with Spain vying
for inclusion, of not already there. But despite the great variety, each
does have a national character, doesn't it? And what you like can depend on
what you grew up with. I grew up with Southeastern Italian, Sonoran Mexican,
and Irish - northern Mexican is my favorite, but Irish is the comfort food.
It does seem to surprise people that Latin American cuisines vary by
country.
Since I think familiarity breeds comfort, and lack of it may breed culinary
contempt, I wonder where you're from? I had one friend who though even the
most mild Mexican food was too spicy. He was from Maine, and said the
hottest thing he could handle were those red potatoes...

I am making plans to go back to Central America to continue our work.
I assumed the food in Costa Rica was like Mexican food,YUK.  It was
different and good and plenty of fruit was always served.  I will
seek out the guavas and see how many different kinds there are.

I've had guavas growing in containers for many years but have yet to
get any fruit.  I've had them flower a few times but not had any set.
I'm assuming they are not self-fruitful?  Anyone know of particularly
good cultivars for container culture?

They make really good container trees, low maintenance, grow thru the
winter in the house.  I also have a few bonsaied in tiny pots & they
do well under those conditions as well.

It would help to know WHICH species of guava everyone is talking about,
There are several tropical and some sub tropical "guavas".   Feijoa and
Psidium are just two genera, to start with.

One of the many advantages to living in Salinas, CA was to be so close to
Monterey Bay and Mexican restaurants: Mexican seafood! I'm trying not to
drool on myself with memories.

Dave Liezen, living nearly two decades now in Spokane, E. WA, and where the
Ashmead's Kernel chip bud from last summer is 14" tall and the Lord Lambourne
and D'Arcy Spice benchgrafts (from Greenmantle) are doing fine.

A question of taste and how much high fructose corn slurp is used to mask the
flavor...

I planted my first Carmine Jewel last fall in NE Oklahoma, zone 6b/7a.  We
had a super-cold winter here with temps down to 25 below zero.  We had a very
late freeze in May.  We had a dry early spring, followed by a wet late spring
and then an extended drought for all of July with almost a month of temps
over 100 degrees.  (It has been a CRAZY weather year--we had one day this
spring where the temperature swing fluctuated 100 degrees in 24 hours!)
Anyway--my Carmine Jewel is getting along just fine with NO supplemental
water.  The water hydrant closest to it has been broken (water pump failure)
until a few days ago so I haven't been able to water there.  It didn't flower
this year, so I don't know yet if it will produce a crop this far south (I
haven't seen a southern zone for it yet--has anyone?), but I have no doubt,
after this summer weather, that it will LIVE in the south just fine.  It's
planted near my Nankings and my Hansens....my Hansens
are doing fine, too, but my Na
nkings are looking a little thirsty.

Jay Cutts said, "I'm wondering if there are some wild cherries in the area
that could also be contributing some pollen.  So the question is whether your
plant has some truly unique properties."

I assure you that if there were any wild cherries around, I would know
about it.  Why do you think you know more than I about what is happening here?

James Erdman wrote, "I had some copper wire that fit the hole in the beads
and I flattened the end of the piece of wire so the bead was stuck on the
wire, then put them on the tree with a couple of turns around the limb."

If you do several turns of the wire around the limb, the wire may not
loosen as limb diameter grows and you'll need to redo each bead every year
or so.  I use a three quarter turn of wire so it expands as the limb
expands.
