I would think a nitrogen fixing herbaceous plant like clover, alfalfa, or lespedeza would be preferable. They would not physically overpower the tree, would not impede access, would be easier to control, and trimmings could be left in place for mulch as opposed to woody trimmings that must be carried away and dispose of.
