I've used autumn olive successfully under nut trees, but under fruit trees they interfere with harvest unless pruned severely.. They are the best N-fixers. Plants like clover which can be mowed, would seem better under fruit trees. Autumn olive is invasive, but I have found mowing a couple of times a year is adequate to control that. Group:

Are nitrogen-fixing shrubs (i.e. Autum olive, goumi, silverberry; sea-buckthorn; etc.) good for planting bellow fruit trees (Prunus, etc.)? Or would this over-do it, maybe encouraging disease? It probably will greatly increase weed recruitment, but so would general fertilization.

Thanks,
Steve; NJ 6b/7a
