About a quarter century ago I had a temporary job with a local nursery for a few weeks. I heard one of the co-owner brothers tell a permanent employee to re-lable a batch of Hedelfingen sweet cheerries as Bings, because they were going to be shipped to a garden centre at Peterborough, where sweet cherries would be most unlikely to fruit if they survived, though a Hedelfingen might live a few years.

I think the only solution is to buy from a nursery to which their fruit tree business is important, and which is concerned about their reputation (expects to be in business a long time, relies largely on word-of-mouth advertising) and which is likely to have a significant fraction of knowledgeable customers and repeat customers. It's unfortunate that the recent postal service changes have handicapped this class of suppliers.

Douglas,

Another problem not mentioned with big box stores is
mislabeling of varieties.
