Does anyone have scionwood of Mango or Sunflower pawpaw? Our mother trees
were destroyed by a flood last August. Be glad to pay for scions. We could
use quite a few. Hector Black, zone 6 middle tn.

Using kolomikta as rootstock may extend the range in wch otherwise only
marginally hardy or even tender actinidia species can be successfully fruited.
I have used A. kolomikta "Aromatnaya" as a rootstock for A. deliciosa
"Hayward" .
It developed a slight overgrowth at the graft union but remains alive after
9
years.
The Hayward has fruited each year(even after -23*C wch would have killed
Hayward on it's own roots to the ground)
Clearly the kolomikta rootstock significantly enhances the hardiness of the
scion variety grafted on it
I believe this would be a good idea for anyone seeking to assess gender and
fruit of seedlings grafted onto this rootstock sooner, since the plants could
be
planted more densely.
Enhanced hardiness, precocity, space.
I would like to know what happens when a. chinensis or a. arguta are grafted
onto a. kolomikta. Are these interspecific unions equally compatible and
long-lived?

I can't find the reference now (it has been a while), but I first read about
this from some work done in New Zealand on kiwifruit rootstocks. I have also
heard this from Bob Guthrie, who has done a lot of work with kolomikta in
Minnesota.

kolomikta breaks dormancy (and flowers) a week ahead of argutas,
so this may increase the vulnerability of the scion variety to a late spring
frost.
Where did you get the information in your post (below)?

Unlike most other Actinidia species, kolomiktas don't seem to have any
compatibility issues with other Actinidia species, so you should be able to
graft on any other species. However, they are not as vigorous, so I could see
problems later on with vigorous scions. I'm not sure how they would affect
vigor
of the scion.

It seems to me that finding a hardy, dwarfing rootstock for many of the
Actinidia's would be a really worthwhile project. There are probably many
gardener's such as me that do not have a lot of space to grow the full sized
vines that the arguta's produce.

Wild truffles grow in my community here in North Central Minnesota but I
don't find them until they've matured, having released their spores, too
late to eat. Is there any way to find them without a trained dog or pig?
