Lotus has a more fibrous root system and should perform better in dry
conditions. It has been suggested it makes a better understock than
virginiana
but it may well freeze out in zone 5. I've had several lotus seedlings here
(Z5b) and they typically freeze to the ground every year. Most no longer
survive. Lotus is commonly used for understock in commercial kaki orchards
on
Cailfornia. But Dr. K. Ryugo had all his U C Davis research kaki on
virginiana.
